The Best Pilates Mats + Where To Buy Them

Are Pilates mats the same as yoga mats?

Where can I buy a Pilates mat?

Which mats are best?

These are questions I receive on a regular basis so today I’m sharing the best Pilates mats and where to buy them.

If you plan to take class in a studio, it’s usually not necessary to bring your own mat. Most studios provide mats for you to use which is a nice perk. However, if you do Pilates at home, it’s important to find a mat that helps you feel your best during your workout.

Pilates mats are typically thicker than yoga mats.

Although I’m not an expert when it comes to yoga, my  understanding is that the mats are thin to help you feel connected to the ground and the earth. This is especially important when practicing poses that require balance.

However, in Pilates you need extra padding to separate you from the hard ground. If you’ve ever done “rolling like a ball” on a hard floor with a thin mat you know what I mean!

Pilates mats should be 1/4″ – 1/2″ thick to provide enough cushion while rolling on your spine.

Unfortunately, thick mats aren’t great for rolling and transporting so it’s nice that studios typically supply their own. If you do plan to cart your mat around town look for one with straps to keep it nicely rolled.

Pilates mats tend to be more expensive than yoga mats due to the extra padding and durability.

If you’re in need of a new mat for your home practice here are a few I recommend…

This is great, Robin, thanks! I have been on the lookout for a new mat since my cat decided to use mine as a scratching pad. 🙂

I work out at home, on floor carpeted with double padding under Berber. Do I still need a mat? I get a sore tailbone even without bare floor.

I bought a mat at Walmart a couple years ago that I love. The brand name is from Gokd’s Gym. It is thicker and rubbed but I love it. It does has a strap to keep it closed. If I remember correctly I paid $30.00 for it.
