Choose Beauty: a new perspective

beau·ty [byoo-tee]
noun
1. the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).

Lately I’ve been re-defining my idea of beauty.

Beauty in myself, beauty in others and beauty in the world around me.

It’s so easy to have a narrow view of beauty. The media feeds us a constant stream of messages telling us what is beautiful and who is beautiful, but it’s such a tiny part of the picture.

I was struck by the definition of beauty as listed above. Particularly this:

“…or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).”

Beauty in it’s truest form can have nothing to do with physical appearance at all. It has to do with high spiritual qualities…qualities that provide intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind.

After having a baby it’s easy to feel less-than-beautiful. Soft, pudgy, skin, spit-up covered clothes, tired eyes…but that’s only focusing on one definition of beauty…the narrow, media-driven view of beauty.

What about the fact that I created a beautiful life?

That my pudgy skin is still pudgy so that I can nourish and grow a precious human being?

The spit-up covered clothes are a sign of a healthy child that is eating and growing.

The tired eyes are a badge of honor for this beautiful right of passage.

I’m challenged and excited today to continue to pursue a deeper meaning and wider view of beauty and I encourage you to do this same.

How can you swap a media-fed insecurity for a new definition of beauty today?
